Is there an alternative?

"For those whose husband or boyfriend is a long-haul truck driver and has transitioned to working in Belarus, please share where he works?" — wrote a woman on Threads, adding that she no longer had the strength for her husband's multi-month cadences.

The post garnered over a hundred comments. It seems the topic is painful for many. But no single solution was found.

A woman whose husband worked as a long-haul truck driver for 10 years shared her story.

"At one point, he said he couldn't do it anymore and quit. We got into debt, bought our own dump truck, and he went to work on a collective farm (kolkhoz). During the season, the earnings are 3-4 times higher than with a truck. Yes, now during harvest season, he has no days off and works from morning till night. But I sleep peacefully knowing he is nearby, and my daughter and I can visit him anytime," the woman wrote.

But not everyone manages to find decent work in Belarus.

"I worked in Europe for ten years, got fed up, my family fell apart, I came to Belarus, drove a truck around Belarus for half a year, lived paycheck to paycheck," shared one man.

Eventually, he bought himself a 12-ton curtain-sided truck, but says things are going very slowly for now.

"After all payments, almost nothing is left for myself, but it's enough for a modest life. I'm thinking of going back to work for a boss, something like that," the man admitted.

One commentator wrote, saying that the easiest thing is to buy a truck-trailer unit and work for oneself.

To which came the reply that it was a very bad idea — Russia is pressing from all sides, and with just one vehicle, nothing will definitely work out in this business.

Struggled in Belarus and returned to work in Europe

Another commentator described the experience of an acquaintance who, after 10 years of working as a truck driver in Europe, also decided to quit and return to Belarus.

"In Belarus, with a residence permit (European country's residence permit – Nasha Niva), state organizations do not hire, and private companies pay 1500-2000 rubles. He struggled for half a year and then went back on cadence."

"I worked on cadences in Poland; being away from home for months is hell. So I took my whole family and moved them. Now it's easier; I can adjust my schedule as I wish," another described the situation.

Some tried working as truck drivers not in the European Union, but in Belarus instead.

"I myself am a husband who tried to return from cadence to Belarus. Screw that. You earn nothing, you're always on the road, stress, winter. Our own people cheat us on wages more than any Lithuanians do," shared the truck driver from his experience.

Another adds that wages are low in Belarus.

"I worked for half a year in Belarus — and it's hell! But you only know by trying, so let him try it here, he'll want to return quickly," the truck driver's wife said about working in Belarus.

From a truck to a bus

A man was found who switched from long-haul trucking in Europe to being a city bus driver.

There are also those who started driving within Belarus or Belarus and Russia to be home more often.

"He returned to Belarus, started driving a truck between Brest and Vitebsk twice a week, works for a private employer, and they pay decently,"

"This is our topic; he used to drive for 3-4 months. Now it's Minsk — Nizhny Novgorod — Minsk. Yes, the salary is lower, but dad is home every week," truck drivers' wives reply.

You have to choose what to have at home

Some note that a woman has to choose: either money or a husband at home.

One commentator even advised the woman to go to work with her husband.

"Either the husband is home, or there's money. You have to choose. Or there's another way out. Get a driving category and work with your husband. Many work together now, and I'm one of them," replied the truck driver.

"Work will be found. You just have to choose between money and a husband at home," writes another.

After reading all opinions, one commentator came to the following conclusion: "Judging by this thread, there's no point in trying to leave a cadence."
