Alexey Likhachev, Head of the Russian state corporation "Rosatom", stated that Alexander Yakovlev, chief engineer of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, died on the morning of July 15 as a result of a drone strike.

The Russian side claims that the strike was carried out by a drone on a Toyota Camry service car near the border of the industrial territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and the city of Enerhodar.
Likhachev stated that Alexander Yakovlev dedicated his entire professional life to nuclear energy and, according to him, died "on duty" while performing his official responsibilities.
According to the head of "Rosatom", the driver of the service vehicle, Dmitry Filippov, also died along with Yakovlev.
Likhachev also reported that the political leadership of Russia has already been informed about the incident. In addition, the Russian side expects a prompt reaction from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding the death of the chief engineer of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
According to data from the Ukrainian "Myrotvorets" database, Alexander Yakovlev was born on January 5, 1980, in the city of Kamianka-Dniprovska, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, and received his higher education at the Odesa Polytechnic University.
He began his career at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant as a pump operator. Later he worked as a turbine department bypass inspector. In 2008, he was appointed lead engineer for turbine control, and later held the position of power unit head. Before being appointed Chief Engineer of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, he served as Deputy Chief Engineer for plant operation.
After the capture of the Zaporizhzhia NPP by Russia in the spring of 2022, he switched to the side of the occupiers and was appointed by them as the chief engineer of the power plant.
