In Egypt, archaeologists have made an unusual discovery: inside a mummy, they found a fragment of Homer's ancient Greek poem "The Iliad", writes Euronews.

Research was conducted in the area of Oxyrhynchus, approximately 190 kilometers south of Cairo. During excavations in one of the tombs, a papyrus was found with the text of the second book of "The Iliad", listing the Greek troops who set off for the Trojan War.
The peculiarity of the find is that this text was not simply in a burial site, but inside a mummy — presumably, it was reused as material for wrapping or an element of the burial shroud. In antiquity, this was quite common: old papyri were sometimes recycled for funerary purposes.
Scientists note that similar papyri are often found in Oxyrhynchus, but their presence inside a mummy is a very rare phenomenon. This makes the find unique both from a literary and a historical point of view.
The discovery also helps to better understand how Greek culture and literature spread in Egypt during the Greco-Roman period and how Egyptian and ancient burial traditions mingled.
