What Are Belarusian Youth Planning? Girls — To Improve Financial Situation, Boys — To Start a Family
Researchers from the Center for New Ideas conducted a survey among Belarusian youth and, among other things, asked about their plans for the coming years.

As the authors of the study note, overall, young people (18-35 years old) choose a strategy of minimizing risks, rather than a strategy of development and growth. In conditions where the macro-environment is perceived as unstable and difficult to predict, prioritizing personal spheres, which are easier to control, becomes rational.
Thus, improving the financial situation came in first place on the list of goals (44%). Second was concern for health and personal well-being (32%). 28% of respondents stated their intention to start or develop a career. In fact, every fourth compatriot seeks a calm and measured life (24%), as well as the development of creative or personal projects (23%). The same number of respondents — 23% — named starting a family as their goal.

Looking at the data in more detail, the topic of life goals turns out to be one of those rare areas where a statistically significant difference is recorded between boys and girls.
It was boys who more often than girls stated plans to start a family — 28% versus 18%.
However, for girls, improving their financial situation is significantly more important: every second surveyed girl stated this. Among boys, this indicator is significantly lower.
At the same time, only one in seven respondents plans to become parents in the next 3-5 years (14% of girls and 15% of boys).

465 respondents aged 18 to 35 took part in the survey. The authors state that the data were re-weighted by gender and region of residence in accordance with official Belstat statistics for 2022. The maximum statistical error is about 4.5 percentage points.
