Vyachaslau Hleb: Maybe we'd only compete with Curaçao

Ex-forward of the Belarusian national football team Vyachaslau Hleb pondered what our national team might look like if it qualified for the 2026 World Cup, writes Football.by.

«I don't know what the national team would look like at the World Cup. Probably beautiful. They would have made new kits. As for the game, completely different time zones, heat — all this is what we are not used to.

The current national team is not even the one from the recent past. Yes, there were uncomplicated groups at the World Cup, but any group would be difficult for us. Well, maybe we'd only compete with Curaçao. Perhaps we would even win.

Our players look weak in ball control, in the speed of decision-making — here we lag behind almost everyone. In 'physicality,' I don't think we would yield much to anyone," Hleb said.

At the World Cup, the Curaçao national team lost to Germany 1:7 and Côte d'Ivoire 0:2, and drew 0:0 with Ecuador. Tunisia, Haiti, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, and Uzbekistan did not score a single point in the group stage. A total of 48 national teams participated in the World Cup out of 211 FIFA members.

The Belarusian national team has never in its history qualified for World Cups or European Championships. The next attempt will be in 2027, when the qualifying tournament for Euro 2028 will take place. The draw will be held in December.
