"Couldn't have lunch anywhere! A tourist spot!" Belarusian woman couldn't eat anywhere in Mir

A Belarusian woman visited Mir Castle and is now outraged that she left hungry.

The famous Mir Castle is one of Belarus's main landmarks. Visitors who come to the settlement on their own find that in the midst of the summer season, it's simply impossible to buy food in this historic place.

"We couldn't eat!!!! All cafes and even the restaurant are closed for special service for tour buses. A huge number of people walked throughout the settlement, asking each other: 'Where can we eat?', 'Is anything open that way?'. Dozens of people came 'on their own', and all these people couldn't have lunch ANYWHERE!!!! A tourist spot! Coffee is only available at Evroopt on the way out of Mir," wrote the author.

The Belarusian woman adds that she has never encountered such a situation anywhere, ever.

Many readers in the comments noted that they themselves had encountered this before, and, as it turns out, even years later, the infrastructure of this most popular place remains in its embryonic state. "Nothing has changed, we were there 10 years ago — it's all the same." "In summer, this has been a constant story for a decade now."

Geography of "Hungry" Tours: From Polotsk to Belovezhskaya Pushcha

Belarusians began sharing their own experiences, and it turned out that Mir is far from the only problematic spot on Belarus's tourist map. Special services for organized groups, weddings, and corporate events completely paralyze public catering for ordinary travelers during the summer.

"The same thing happened to us last year in Polotsk. Wherever we tried, it was all special service for excursions. We had to go to 'Kopeecha' and have a hobo-style snack on a bench near the entrance."

"We encountered this in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. They simply told us: go eat at another cafe, we have a reservation (two cafes were closed). I barely managed to get some draniki (potato pancakes) for takeout from them."

"I encountered something similar in Lida. I decided to visit the castle... But there you have to book in advance... Lida is a small town, and there aren't many places for a decent meal."

"We were in a similar situation in Navahrudak, Miory, Zhodzina...", "The same situation in Mir, Zaslaŭje, and other popular towns."

"Belarusian tourism, as it is. Service around tourist attractions is simply zero here." "That's why there's no desire to travel around Belarus. Prices are hell, service is 0. This is called tourism development."

"'Tourist attractiveness,' officials used to say."

As a result, as evident from the comments, the only salvation for Mir and other tourist spots for solo travelers currently remains street stalls with pancakes, if they are open, and traditional Belarusian "ssaboyki" (packed lunches) with thermoses, which experienced travelers now take with them even when visiting the country's top attractions.

"I always take a thermos with tea or coffee and various snacks with me... I've learned my lesson. It's better to sit down and calmly have your own trusted food. And it will be 100 times cheaper."

"Thanks to Belorusneft gas stations: no frills, but you can reliably grab a snack."

"The quality of food in cafes at tourist places is simply disgusting. We always take a packed lunch and go to a beautiful spot at the attraction."
