Special Envoy for the Middle East and son-in-law of US President Jared Kushner held talks with representatives of the Palestinian group Hamas to discuss the implementation of a US-backed peace plan for the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian official told the BBC.
According to him, the meeting took place on Sunday in Egypt, the Hamas delegation was led by the group's new leader, Khalil al-Hayya.
In July, the "Board of Peace", established on the initiative of Donald Trump, announced an agreement on the "complete disarmament" of Hamas and other groups in the Gaza Strip.
Last week, Israel rejected Trump's 15-point plan, which envisages the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the restoration of the Gaza Strip under a new civilian Palestinian administration.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the withdrawal of Israeli troops would not happen until Hamas was "truly disarmed".
On Sunday, eight Middle Eastern countries issued a statement condemning Israel's refusal to accept the plan.
Trump's "Board of Peace" was initially created to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip, but later expanded its scope and now reportedly deals with conflicts worldwide.
Kushner's negotiations with the group's leader marked the first meeting of such a level since the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip last year.
Reportedly, the talks also involved the heads of the "Board of Peace" — Bulgarian diplomat Nikolay Mladenov and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, as well as representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey — countries that act as mediators in the peace process.
No official statements were made about the results of the negotiations; it was only reported that they focused on measures for the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, and issues of humanitarian aid.
