The Council reaffirmed its decision, adopted in March 2022, reviewed in 2023 and 2025, and reconsidered in March 2026, to suspend Russian and Belarusian athletes, officials, and support staff from international competitions.
President Sebastian Coe stated: «We presented the Council with possible options for considering this issue. However, the original decision on sanctions, which protect the integrity and purity of our competitions, remains in force, as there has been no real progress towards peaceful negotiations,» the organization's press release states.
Belarusian and Russian athletes have been suspended from international competitions since March 2022 following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Belarusian side requested consideration of allowing athletes to participate in international tournaments, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 2026 World Junior Championships in Eugene.
