Sandu: The issue of withdrawing Russian troops from Transnistria must be raised during Russia-Ukraine negotiations
Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that in the event of possible negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, the European Union could also raise the issue of the peaceful withdrawal of Russian military personnel from Transnistria. According to her, this topic remains one of Chisinau's priorities in dialogue with European partners.

Maia Sandu emphasized that Transnistria is part of Moldova, and the presence of a Russian military contingent in the region, in her opinion, has no legal basis. She noted that this issue is regularly raised during contacts with EU representatives.
Transnistria factually separated from Moldova in 1990. The armed conflict between the sides ended in 1992 after the signing of a ceasefire agreement, but the status of the region remains unresolved to this day.
Currently, about 1,500 Russian troops are stationed in Transnistria. Officially, they are allegedly participating in a peacekeeping operation and controlling the observance of the ceasefire regime in accordance with the agreement of July 21, 1992.
At the same time, negotiations on resolving the war in Ukraine remain virtually suspended, and Russia and the Transnistrian authorities have repeatedly stated that they do not consider the possibility of withdrawing the Russian contingent.
Earlier, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu accused Chisinau of attempting to escalate the situation around Transnistria and force Russian troops out of the region. In turn, Vitaly Ignatiev, head of the foreign policy department of the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, asserted that Russian peacekeepers would remain in the region regardless of the further fate of the peacekeeping mission agreement. The Kremlin also urged Moldovan authorities to exercise caution when speaking on this topic.
