The French national team confidently advanced to the Round of 16 of the World Cup, defeating Sweden 3:0. The French had a large number of scoring opportunities and could have won even more convincingly.
In the first half, the French were in no hurry to increase the tempo, but gradually took complete control of the initiative. They repeatedly threatened the opponent's goal, hit the post, and created dangerous moments. And in the 45th minute, Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring after a quick corner kick.
After the break, France continued to control the game. In the 53rd minute, Michael Olise set up Bradley Barcola for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and he doubled the lead. For Olise, this was his fourth assist of the tournament – he became one of the championship's top assist providers.
In the 74th minute, Olise once again provided the decisive pass, and Mbappé completed his brace, accurately converting a one-on-one chance.
This goal was the French forward's fifth of the tournament, and by this metric, he caught up with Argentine Lionel Messi in the list of the championship's top scorers. Additionally, after today's brace, 27-year-old Mbappé is just one goal behind 39-year-old Messi in the list of all-time World Cup top scorers. Messi has 19 goals, Mbappé has 18. The French forward also became a record-holder for the number of goals scored in the tournament's playoffs (10).
The Swedish national team created almost no dangerous moments throughout the entire match. Its leading forwards Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak received virtually no balls in attack. Only towards the end of the match did Gyökeres have a good scoring opportunity, but the French goalkeeper Mike Maignan saved his team.
According to statistics, France had 25 shots on goal compared to 8 for the Swedes, and outshot them 12:3 in shots on target. In terms of expected goals (xG), the French also had a significant advantage – 3.17 against 0.67.
In the next round of the playoffs on July 5, the French national team will face Paraguay.
