Argentina is preparing to launch a citizenship-by-investment program.
As reported Financial Times, citing sources, "golden passports" could be introduced this year. They will be issued in exchange for a donation of $500,000 or the purchase of zero-coupon sovereign bonds worth approximately $1 million.
Argentina hopes that this program will help pay off tens of billions of dollars in debt that the country will face in the coming years. The country has not yet returned to international capital markets since the 2020 restructuring and is looking for various alternatives to attract dollars.
The program's launch comes as Milei's market-oriented government tries to change the image of a country where wealth taxes and economic instability often forced its own elite to move abroad. One of the country's wealthiest people, e-commerce billionaire Marcos Galperin, moved to Uruguay in 2020.
Argentina is home to 46 million people. An Argentine passport grants visa-free entry to approximately 170 countries (with a Belarusian passport, visa-free entry or a simplified system is available for about 70 countries).
