A virus is knocking out tennis players at the Madrid tournament. Aryna Sabalenka is also playing there.
Several tennis players have already suffered from a virus at the Madrid tournament. Coco Gauff vomited during a match break. World number one Aryna Sabalenka is also in Madrid, and she has not yet complained about her well-being.

On Sunday, tennis player Coco Gauff vomited while playing a match against Sorana Cîrstea. Gauff took a medical timeout, sports.ru reports.
Gauff held on for the win and explained in her on-court interview:
«I think I caught the same thing everyone here in Madrid has. Honestly, I was just trying not to vomit right on the court — that was the main goal. I vomited after the first set, then in the second, right in front of everyone — it got a little better. I felt very tired, but generally, I can play tired without problems, it's just that here I also had to try and keep everything I had eaten inside me.»
She admitted she didn't want to withdraw, as it would have been the second time in a month and a half after her injury in Indian Wells — although before that, she had finished all matches since August 2022.
It turned out that by the third set, the pills Coco received during the medical break had taken effect. And she won the third set 6:1.
«Everything was normal in the morning. At night, I had strange feelings: anxiety, nerves — I took melatonin and fell asleep. I generally have difficulty realizing when something is happening with my body; usually, I don't tell anyone anything — though here I definitely should have discussed it with a physiotherapist,» Gauff said about an hour later. «At some point in the match, I felt like I was just going to collapse. During a rally, it seemed like I was going to vomit right during play. Obviously, there's some virus going around; I'm definitely not the only one with stomach problems. Plus, it seems a virus is circulating in the city — I think that's where it's all coming from.»
Before this, Iga Świątek could not finish her match against Ann Li: on the contrary, she was hit harder by the third set. At 0:3, she apathetically walked to the net during a game on her serve.
«I have a virus; it was awful to play,» Świątek said later. «This virus is circulating here among players, maybe elsewhere too. I had absolutely no energy, just running on empty. The symptoms are not exactly what you should know about. I couldn't even drink because I already felt full.»
In the women's draw, top players (including last year's Australian Open champion Madison Keys) have certainly suffered from the virus; in the men's, it's not yet at the same level, but there are examples too.
Marin Čilić did not play his second-round match against João Fonseca on Friday, even though he had made a comeback in the first round against Zizou Bergs the day before.
Corentin Moutet apologized to fans on Instagram after his Saturday loss in straight sets to Daniel Mérida, explaining his poor performance by saying he had been suffering from a virus for two days.
