Russian political prisoner Oleg Tyryshkin dies. He is already the third this April

The 64-year-old Russian political prisoner Oleg Tyryshkin has died. He was sentenced to 2 years for a comment on "Vkontakte". Activists who corresponded with prisoners informed RusNews about Tyryshkin's death, The Insider writes.

Oleg Tyryshkin

Reportedly, the cause of Oleg Tyryshkin's death was heart problems. His exact location at the time of death is unknown: presumably in the Kemerovo region, but the man could also have been in transit.

Oleg Tyryshkin was 64 years old. He was a miner from Kuzbass and had previously been involved in trade union activities. In December 2024, the man was sentenced to two years in a general regime penal colony under the article on "public justification of terrorism". The reason was a comment on "Vkontakte" about the death of Akhmat Kadyrov, father of the current head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, in 2004. He was supposed to serve his term until December 2026.

Tyryshkin himself did not admit guilt and claimed that his words were emotional and contained no calls for violence. His trial was held in a closed session, and hearings were repeatedly postponed, partly due to the defendant's poor health.

In 2025, the appellate court upheld his sentence without changes, despite complaints about his worsening health. It was reported that Tyryshkin had serious health problems, including a brain cyst.

This is already the third known death of a political prisoner in Russia this April. Earlier, on April 8, in the pre-trial detention center in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, 53-year-old artist Andrey Akuzin, arrested for an internet comment, committed suicide. And on April 17, the death of 43-year-old political prisoner, preacher, and blogger Vegan Khristolyubov Bozhiy in a penal colony in Voronezh became known. The official causes of his death were not disclosed.
