34-year-old Belarusian native Karina Zdanevich-Sphykhalskaya was detained in Italy at the request of the Belarusian authorities. This happened on February 1 at Orio al Serio Airport in Bergamo during passport control, writes Reform.news based on Italian press materials.

In Belarus, the woman is accused of allegedly deliberately bringing about bankruptcy in 2017–2018. An arrest warrant was issued back in 2021 by the Brest prosecutor's office.
Karina herself calls the accusations fabricated and links the persecution to her civic stance. After the 2020 elections, she participated in rallies in support of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya near the Belarusian embassy in Warsaw.
After her detention, the woman spent five days in a prison in Bergamo, and then she was released under the obligation to regularly report to the police. She is currently in Milan and cannot return to her children in Poland.
The Italian prosecutor's office opposed the extradition of the Belarusian woman, noting the risk of political persecution in Belarus. The Polish consulate also drew attention to this, as the woman holds both Polish and Belarusian citizenship.
The case will continue in June at the Brescia Court of Appeal. Karina's lawyer is seeking to have her data removed from the Interpol database to prevent similar situations in the future.
