Trump Divided NATO Allies into 'Good' and 'Bad'

The administration of US President Donald Trump has prepared an unofficial list of NATO countries, dividing them into 'good' and 'bad' allies. The goal is to assess who and how supported the US in the war against Iran, and to decide how to react to those who did not, writes Politico, citing three European diplomats and an American official.

It is reported that before NATO Secretary General Marc Rutte's visit to Washington, American officials analyzed each country's contribution to collective defense and categorized them on this basis.

Earlier, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that countries that actively support the US and fulfill their obligations would receive priority in cooperation. Those who do not, might face negative consequences.

It is not yet precisely known what measures will be taken. Possible options include the redeployment of American troops, reduction of joint exercises, or restrictions on arms sales. However, some steps might be complex and expensive to implement.

According to media reports, Poland and Romania, as well as the Baltic states — Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia — which consistently allocate significant funds to defense, could receive the most support from the US. For example, Poland almost entirely bears the costs of maintaining American troops, and Romania allowed its military infrastructure to be used during the US war against Iran. Bulgaria's role in supporting American logistics in the Middle East is also noted.

At the same time, some countries, including Spain, the United Kingdom, and France, did not support the US in the Iranian campaign, which caused dissatisfaction in Washington. Spain was particularly criticized, having previously even refused to increase defense spending to the proposed level.

The White House openly expressed disappointment with allies, emphasizing that the US expects greater support in return for its own security commitments. Trump himself, after meeting with Marc Rutte, also critically spoke about NATO, stating that the alliance does not always support the US at the right moment. In turn, representatives of American diplomacy note that the question of the US role in NATO may be reconsidered.
