Code word "parabola": courier of phone scammers detained in Minsk
The young man, unwittingly, became a courier for phone scammers.
Employees of the criminal investigation department of the Maskoŭski District Department of Internal Affairs in the capital detained a 22-year-old Minsk resident who was acting as a courier for phone scammers, believing he was helping the police, writes BelTA.
Initially, he received a call from an alleged representative of a mobile operator who, under the pretext of renewing his contract, convinced him to state a code from a message.
Following this, he received calls from fake law enforcement officers who stated that suspicious financial transfers abroad were being made from his bank account and that a criminal case had already been opened.
Under psychological pressure and threats, the young man was transferred to a pseudo-prosecutor's office employee who demanded that he declare all his savings and assist the investigation.
When it became clear that the young man had no cash, and failed to get a loan, the scammers offered him to become a freelance employee and carry out courier assignments.
Following the instructions of his curators, the Minsk resident picked up a package containing more than 20,000 rubles at the given coordinates, taped it up, and left it at the agreed-upon location. He was told to keep about 400 rubles for himself and hand them over during the next assignment.
The next day, the individual, using the code word "parabola," picked up an envelope with cash from a minor and transferred more than 5,000 rubles to the specified details, adding 1,000 rubles from his own earnings from his official workplace to this amount.
