The US District Court for the Southern District of California ordered the US Department of State to resume the Green Card lottery, which was suspended at the end of 2025.

The department must begin registration for participants in the program for the 2027 fiscal year no later than October 18. Application acceptance will last 30 days. In addition, the State Department is obligated to publish the registration start date on its official website.
The White House decided to suspend the program in December 2025 after a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Two people died and nine others were injured in that incident.
The shooter was not immediately apprehended. He was found dead several days later. It turned out that he came to the US in 2017 thanks to the Green Card program.
A Green Card is a document that confirms a foreigner's right to permanent residence and work in the United States. Annually, up to 55,000 such documents can be issued within the framework of the corresponding lottery.
