Flavio Bolsonaro Overtakes Lula da Silva in Brazilian Presidential Elections
Yesterday, the first round of presidential elections took place in Brazil. Another round will be held in two weeks.

The incumbent President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, trails Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in the first round of the presidential elections, according to data from the country's Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
After processing results from 98.65% of polling stations, Bolsonaro has 47.27% of the votes, and Lula has 44.88%.
More than 55 million people voted for Bolsonaro, and about 53 million for the incumbent president. The difference is slightly more than 2 million votes.
Most likely, there will be a second round on October 25. To win in the first round, a candidate must receive more than 50% of valid votes — excluding blank and invalid ballots.
Lula da Silva, a representative of leftist forces, was president of the country from 2001-2011, and is currently in his third term since 2019.
Flavio Bolsonaro represents right-wing parties. He is the son of Jair Bolsonaro, who was president of the country from 2019-2023 and is now sentenced to 27 years for an attempted coup.
Earlier opinion polls gave a slight advantage to Lula da Silva, for whom the poorer segments of society and predominantly the north and northeast of the country vote. Other candidates gained less than five percent.
