Sturgeon Moon This Year Will Coincide with an Eclipse and Turn Red
At the end of August, Belarusians can expect two interesting astronomical spectacles: this summer's last full moon will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse, writes Tochka.by.
On the night of August 28, the Moon will pass through Earth's shadow. During the maximum phase, Earth's shadow will cover up to 96.2% of its disk. Therefore, the Moon may acquire a reddish, coppery, or brownish hue — the so-called "blood moon."
In Belarus, the eclipse can be observed on the morning of August 28. In Minsk, the partial phase will begin at approximately 05:33. At this time, the Moon will be low above the western horizon, and it will be possible to observe Earth's shadow gradually covering its disk.
The best conditions for observation will be until approximately 06:10. After that, the Moon will descend even lower and soon disappear below the horizon. The maximum phase of the eclipse is expected around 07:12 Minsk time, but it will not be possible to see it in Belarus, as the Moon will have set by then.
Therefore, for observation, it is worth choosing a location in advance with a clear western or south-western horizon, where houses, trees, and other obstacles do not obstruct the view. Residents of North, Central, and South America will be able to see the eclipse most fully.
The red hue of the Moon occurs because Earth blocks direct sunlight during an eclipse. Some light passes through Earth's atmosphere. Blue shades scatter more strongly, while red and orange rays reach the Moon's surface. This is why it can appear red or coppery.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye — special protective glasses are not needed. Binoculars or a small telescope will allow a better view of the edge of Earth's shadow.
The next total lunar eclipse will occur only on December 31, 2028.
The name "Sturgeon Moon" originates from the traditions of some indigenous peoples of North America. In late summer, active fishing for sturgeon began in rivers and the Great Lakes, so the August full moon came to be called the Sturgeon Moon. The names Corn, Grain, and Red Moon are also used.
The full moon itself can be observed from the evening of August 27 to the morning of August 29.
