Who was the Kyiv shooter? A military pensioner with antisemitic views, born in Moscow, who lived in Donbas
Ukrainian special forces eliminated the terrorist who shot dead 6 people and wounded 15 in Kyiv. More and more details are emerging about who this person was.
The shooter's name is Dmytro Vasylchenkov. He is 58 years old. Born in Moscow, he held Ukrainian citizenship. He previously lived in Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, then in Russia's Ryazan, and finally in Kyiv.
«In the Holosiivskyi district of the capital, a 58-year-old native of Moscow opened fire, killing four people, after which he barricaded himself in a supermarket and held hostages.
According to preliminary data, he used automatic weapons. Simultaneously, a fire broke out in the attacker's registered apartment,» — stated Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko.
Dmytro Vasylchenkov served in the Ukrainian army until 2004, in the logistics battalion of the 254th Motorized Rifle Division, which was stationed in Donetsk Oblast. He retired from the army after serving his pension.
Previously, he permanently lived in Bakhmut, and from 2015-2017 temporarily — in Russia's Ryazan. Later, he returned to Ukraine and lived in Kyiv not far from where he opened fire on people today.
On a Facebook page, active from 2016-2019 and maintained under the nickname «Bakhmut V.D.V», Vasylchenkov published anti-Ukrainian and antisemitic posts.
In them, he called for a forceful «cleansing» of society, referring to Adolf Hitler's methods, denied Ukraine's legitimacy, and openly regretted that Igor Girkin stopped halfway in 2014.
In 2024, Dmytro Vasylchenkov was tried for intentional infliction of bodily harm, but was released from criminal liability after reconciliation with the victim.
The weapon with which Vasylchenkov carried out the shooting was legal and registered, states Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko. According to him, back in December 2025, the man applied to the system that issues relevant permits, requesting to fire this weapon due to the expiry of its term, and also brought a medical certificate. Now the investigation will ascertain which specific authority issued the man this certificate and other permits.
