Germany, Italy, and Belgium Want to Suspend the Adoption of New EU Laws
The leaders of Germany, Italy, and Belgium emphasized in their appeal that the EU needs an "emergency brake" mechanism which would enhance the competitiveness of the European economy.

Germany, Italy, and Belgium have proposed creating a mechanism that would give EU member states the right to suspend the adoption of new European laws if such regulations create an excessive burden on governments and businesses, reports DW, citing a joint letter from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Belgian Head of Government Bart De Wever, addressed to the President of the European Council, António Costa.
The leaders of Germany, Italy, and Belgium emphasized in their appeal that the EU needs an "emergency brake" mechanism which would enhance the competitiveness of the European economy.
They also called for "significantly accelerating planning and approval procedures" for new regulations, as well as creating the possibility to temporarily suspend the effect of certain laws and regulatory requirements.
«We call for the development of new ambitious regulatory simplification packages that will allow decisive progress in reducing bureaucracy in the European Union», — stated Merz, Meloni, and De Wever.
They sent the letter a few days before the EU leaders' meeting on Thursday, October 15, where the EU budget, energy prices, and support for Ukraine will be discussed.
