Personal Data Protection Center believes traffic police with "shame board" violates law
The National Personal Data Protection Center has questioned the legality of the new intelligent traffic police (GAI) system, which publicly displays the registration numbers of offending vehicles on roadside boards.
The technology for automatic violation recording on the P-53 highway from Zhodzina to Kurgan Slavy (Mound of Glory) has raised questions among lawyers, ONT reports.
The essence of the conflict lies in the legal status of a vehicle's state registration number. According to Belarusian legislation, this information is considered personal data, and its dissemination without the owner's consent is restricted.
Vitaly Dzisko, Head of the Control and Audit Department of the National Personal Data Protection Center of Belarus, confirmed that they have prepared an official letter demanding clarification of the legal grounds for such data processing.
The new system uses artificial intelligence to detect various types of violations: speeding, lack of vehicle inspection, unfastened seatbelts, and phone use while driving. They also promise to monitor humorous stickers on cars.
Information about the violator is displayed for public viewing on a special board.
The traffic police (GAI) state that the method has an educational purpose, and the experiment will become a permanent practice.
