NATO Wants to Abandon Annual Summits to Avoid Provoking Trump Unnecessarily

NATO leadership is discussing the possibility of abandoning the alliance's annual summits. This is reported by Reuters sources. According to the agency's information, such a step is being considered partly to avoid conflicts with US President Donald Trump during his last year in the White House.

Trump has repeatedly criticized other NATO countries. Recently, he expressed dissatisfaction that allies allegedly did not sufficiently support the United States in the war against Iran.

Over NATO's 77 years of existence, summits have been held with varying periodicity. However, since 2001, they have taken place annually.

It is already known that the meeting of the alliance leaders is scheduled to take place in Ankara on July 7-8, 2026. However, some NATO members believe that the frequency of such meetings could be reduced.

One diplomat reported that the summit planned for 2027 in Albania will most likely take place, but the meeting in 2028 might be canceled.

In 2028, the next presidential elections are scheduled in the US, after which Trump will leave office.

A NATO representative, in response to a journalist's inquiry, stated that the alliance will continue to regularly hold meetings of heads of state and government, and will continue consultations on common security issues between summits.
