«Cyberpartisans» criticized for hacking National Library website — because the catalog no longer works. They responded
On March 27, «Cyberpartisans» hacked the website of the National Library. Since then, it has not been working, there is no internet in the library, and readers cannot search for books through the online catalog — they have to go to the library in person. Who is to blame for the library's work being partially paralyzed?
«Cyberpartisans» announced the hacking of the library's website on March 27, timing the attack to coincide with Freedom Day. For a short time, images featuring "Pahonia" dedicated to Freedom Day and inscriptions "Long Live Belarus!" appeared on the main page of the website.
However, problems arose after the action. People who tried to use the library's online catalog in recent days complained that it was not working. The library itself reported that there was no internet in their building, and the electronic catalog could only be used on-site, wrote «Zerkalo».
Scientist Siarhiej Besarab expressed concern on Facebook that the action might have damaged the library's catalogs. Others also voiced criticism of the action.
Press secretary of «Cyberpartisans», Yuliana Shametavets, commented that the current problems with the National Library's website are not related to that hack. When the team hacks internal systems, they announce it publicly:
«During the action, we only changed the images on the National Library's website, putting up images with national colors and greetings. We did not disrupt the website's operation and did not even shut it down, because the purpose of the action was for people to be able to visit the website and see the greetings. The Lukashenka regime supporters, who did not like this, disrupted the website's operation».
The «Cybers» compare this to a situation where someone would come to the library building and hang a poster with greetings on the door — arguing that this does not disrupt the building's operation.
«We urge public figures to be careful in their public statements: first gather evidence, contact us for comments. It's better to clarify, to ask, rather than immediately throwing out fabrications and accusations without proof,» — added Shametavets in a comment.
