The musical duo Dead Man’s Bones, which includes actor Ryan Gosling and musician Zach Shields, announced their return after a 17-year hiatus. New songs will be released on October 27. The band announced this on social media.

The project originated in 2005 when Gosling and Shields discovered they both shared a fascination with Disneyland's Haunted Mansion attraction. Shields was so interested in ghosts as a child that he was even prescribed therapy, and Gosling's parents moved out of a house they believed to be haunted. As a result, the musicians decided to create love stories about ghosts and monsters.
Initially, they conceived the project as a soundtrack for a play about the love between a monster and a ghost, but the production was canceled due to high production costs.
Dead Man’s Bones' first and so far only album was released on October 6, 2009, on the ANTI- label. Its recording featured the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir, founded by Flea, the bassist of Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Gosling and Shields played all the instruments themselves, including those they had not mastered before. They also established specific recording rules: not to use a click track and to do no more than three takes for each song. The musicians believed that imperfections in performance would help highlight the music's strengths.
In the autumn of 2009, the duo embarked on a tour to support the album, which included Halloween performances. A local children's choir joined the musicians in each city.
Dead Man’s Bones songs were featured in the film 'The Conjuring' (2013), the French film 'A Panic Century' (2013), the Netflix series 'The Boroughs' (2026), and the film 'They Will Kill You' (2026). The use of a children's choir also inspired the Polish black-death metal band Behemoth to record the album 'I Loved You at Your Darkest,' which was released in 2018.
The duo's return became known on October 22. In the published video, a voice recites lines about ghosts and dancing in the twilight, and a child announces the release date of the new songs. Actress Eva Mendes, Gosling's wife, had previously written that she would like to 'summon new Dead Man’s Bones music'. After the announcement of the return, she noted that her husband had kept his promise.
Ryan Gosling is also known for musical numbers in the films 'La La Land' and 'Barbie'. For the song 'I’m Just Ken,' he received a Grammy nomination and performed it at the 2024 Oscar ceremony.
The actor is currently participating in the promotional campaign for the film 'Project: End of the World'. In 2027, the film 'Star Destroyer' is expected to be released, and his possible appearance as Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is also being discussed.
