Near Vilnius on Sunday, border guards pulled a smugglers' raft, which was heading from Belarus, out of the Viliya river. It contained a batch of cigarettes worth over 13 thousand euros.

Border guards noticed a snowflake-shaped object (a hexagon) in the Viliya near the bank, floating towards Lithuania, and pulled it ashore, reports the Lithuanian Border Guard Service.
Border guards pulled this "snowflake" ashore. After the ends of the metal structure were cut, 2400 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps were removed from its internal cavities. The tobacco products were wrapped in polyethylene film. Their value, including all taxes due in Lithuania, amounts to 13,248 euros.

For such a crime, Lithuanian law provides for a fine or imprisonment for up to four years.
Recently, border guards have very rarely encountered the transportation of Belarusian cigarettes on such "rafts." In similar cases, batches of cigarettes are lowered into the river on the Belarusian bank, forming "rafts" or using various structures to which GPS equipment is attached, Lithuanian border guards report.
