The government of South Korea has decided to recall its ambassador from Ukraine to the homeland, the country's Foreign Ministry reported. The ministry stated that they expect the issues between the two countries to be resolved and will continue consultations with the Ukrainian side, reports Dozhd.
Seoul accuses Kyiv of publicly announcing the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea, despite the parties having agreed to keep it a secret, and then falsely denying that such an agreement existed.
Ukraine, as stated in Seoul's announcement, repeatedly discussed the transfer of prisoners with South Korea and itself asked not to disclose information about it, fearing that domestically they would be criticized for a missed opportunity to exchange North Koreans for Ukrainians.
South Korea agreed to this, including for the safety of the prisoners themselves and their families. However, then, the statement said, Zelenskyy, without sufficient consultation, spoke about the transfer in his speech at the UN General Assembly, and the Ukrainian side began to deny that a confidentiality agreement existed.
Later, Ukraine apologized for disclosing information about the transfer of DPRK prisoners to South Korea, but Seoul considered this insufficient and promised "decisive measures".
