Tragedy in the Spanish Championship: Player Dies After Collision with Goalkeeper
The tragedy occurred in a match of the 12th round of Segunda (second division) between "Tenerife" and "Andorra" (2:2).
In the seventh minute of injury time in the second half, the visiting goalkeeper Jesus Avona roughly tackled opposing forward Jesus de Miguel in the center of the field, trying to prevent him from getting the ball. For this, the goalkeeper immediately received a direct red card.
The forward remained lying on the pitch, and a few seconds later, other players noticed he had lost consciousness. The "Tenerife" player was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
De Miguel's heart and breathing stopped for almost 20 minutes. He was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the way to the hospital.
This morning, the club announced that the 30-year-old Spanish footballer had died.
"With a heavy heart and a lump in our throats, unable to believe this is true, "Tenerife" announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel, which occurred this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 08:00.
There are no words of comfort, absolutely nothing that could alleviate this sorrow. We stand with his devastated family, with his loved ones, with everyone who mourns this terrible outcome today.
Jesus de Miguel's family thanks everyone for every expression of support and, with the same sincerity, asks for maximum respect for their privacy during these terrible moments," the club's message states.
