Andrei S., Deputy Head of the Caustic Soda Regeneration Workshop at "Grodno Azot", died by suicide.
As reported by "Rabochy Rukh" (Workers' Movement), the body was found near the plant. The deceased is survived by two minor children.
According to unofficial sources, a management meeting took place at the plant before his death. The reason was the collapse of the lining in waste incineration furnaces – instead of imported bricks, Russian ones were purchased for repair, which turned out to be of poor quality. At the meeting, according to the same sources, sharp accusations were made and a search for a "scapegoat" occurred.
A source from "Zerkalo" (Mirror) reports additional details: the deceased was given a verbal instruction to increase the burning temperature so that the process would comply with environmental standards. He followed the instruction — and it was precisely after this that the bricks were destroyed. According to the same source, the director "hung" all the damage — 1.2 million rubles — personally on Andrei, saying that he "would pay the debt for life or go to prison." Andrei took this to heart.
