"You can't please everyone." Authorities offended by comparison of a monument for the Year of Belarusian Woman to a tombstone

"This idea spontaneously arose in the regional housing and communal services: what a good city, let's organize such an event. Well, we did it. It's better not to hold them anymore," they told a "Belsat" correspondent, who called as a private person, at the Nesvizh District Executive Committee, when asked to comment on the "tombstone" in honor of the Year of the Belarusian Woman.

This sign was erected on the territory of the historical and cultural museum-reserve, where an alley was planted and a "new public space 'Women of Housing and Communal Services - Together'" was created.

"The Year of the Woman hasn't ended yet, and they've already buried her," "Funeral feast for the Belarusian woman," "Is this a mass (sisterly) grave for women of housing and communal services? It somehow became scary" — these are just some comments from social media.

To this, the executive committee replied that "everyone has their own opinion":

"Are three or five people who expressed their opinion on the internet already considered the majority? What kind of fuss has started, I don't understand. Everyone simply has their own taste. Some like it, some don't. You can't please everyone."

Officials assure that the memorial sign was received for free, but did not admit who made it. They say: an ordinary stone was brought from a field and cut.

"This is not a monument, it's just a sign indicating that women of housing and communal services, in the Year of the Woman, all together planted a beautiful alley. There will be decorative apple trees, yellow and red, and trees similar to sakura. From the side of Bernardine Pond, it will look very beautiful."

After a wave of criticism, the memorial sign might be redesigned, the executive committee did not rule out. They said they would consult. At the same time, they rejected the claims of the odious Olga Bondarava, who also expressed outrage at the sign's appearance: "Is she an authority for us? I personally don't know this woman and don't read her comments. And, frankly speaking, for me as a Belarusian, she is not an authority."

More important for the authorities would be feedback from local residents, not from "armchair bloggers":

"Before discussing, one should at least once take an active part in the life of their city, district. If someone had taken part, planted an alley, installed benches, done something else, and then said: you did something foolish, it's worth redoing — we would accept that."

Finally, the "Belsat" interlocutor complained that there are few initiative people in the city, and because of this, the motivation to do anything wanes:

"Here in Nesvizh, we do something, a lot is being done, different squares, and so on, and so forth. However, for some reason, this is done by a very small group of initiative people. And when an idea is implemented, so many critics are found that, frankly speaking, it would be better to do nothing. We would receive criticism that nothing is being done — and that's it."
