Minsk bids farewell to Mikalai Charhinets MANY PHOTOS

A farewell ceremony for writer and former chairman of the Union of Writers of Belarus, Mikalai Charhinets, is taking place in Minsk at the Central House of Officers. He passed away on July 7 at the age of 89.

Representatives of state structures attended the ceremony, including Head of the Presidential Administration Dzmitry Kruty, Deputy Prime Minister Natallia Piatkevich, heads of parliamentary chambers, other officials, as well as colleagues and relatives.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka sent a wreath for the farewell.

Mikalai Charhinets was known primarily as the author of police detective novels, and also as the long-time head of the official Union of Writers of Belarus, which was established in 2005 after a split in the literary community and lobbied the interests of the authorities. He held an academic degree of Candidate of Legal Sciences and the rank of Lieutenant General of the internal service.
