The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of self-proclaimed Abkhazia stated that Nauru's decision was "forced" and a result of external pressure. The Abkhazian side claims that after Nauru recognized Abkhazia's independence in 2009, a political dialogue and cooperation allegedly developed between the countries.

The Abkhazian Foreign Ministry's statement notes that relations between the two countries allegedly faced opposition from Georgia and its Western partners. According to the Abkhazian agency, after joint projects moved into the practical sphere, a campaign of "external pressure" began against Nauru, which included political and diplomatic influence, as well as economic restrictions.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, the government of Nauru decided to terminate diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia on July 21.

Nauru is a small island nation in the Pacific Ocean. In 2009, it recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which most countries in the world consider parts of Georgian territory. Two other similar countries, Vanuatu and Tuvalu, also did this, but they withdrew their recognition even earlier. After Nauru's withdrawal, only three states in the world, besides Russia, officially recognize the puppet entities in the South Caucasus – Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Syria.
