Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who is in exile, was denied entry to her homeland. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT) citing its sources.

The Nobel laureate planned to return to Venezuela from Panama to participate in the aftermath of recent earthquakes.

She intended to use the island of Curaçao as a transit point, however, the Dutch authorities rejected her entry request after the United States refused to act as a guarantor for the politician.

According to the publication, the White House and the U.S. State Department considered the opposition leader's actions an ill-timed "political stunt" that could destabilize the situation in Venezuela.
