The VIII Republican Peat Football Tournament has started in the Pukhovichi district, writes BelTA.
Peat (swamp) football is one of the most spectacular sporting events. Instead of a grass pitch, the game takes place on peat fields in extreme conditions for the players.
According to Energy Minister Dmitry Moroz, peat has remained in demand in the country for many years, and the search for opportunities for its use never stops.
"Today's event is another opportunity to draw attention to our national heritage," he noted.
This year, 27 teams are competing for victory: energy workers, representatives of the cement industry, the Minsk Regional Executive Committee, media, BNTU students, and a team from Russia.
In addition to the matches, guests can expect a concert, food courts, interactive platforms and contests, as well as a festive fireworks display.
Peat football emerged as a sport in Finland and gained international status in 2000. In 2016, peat football competitions were organized in Belarus, and since 2019, they have been held annually in the country.
