Presenting his priorities in the new position, Stoyanov noted that he does not see a military solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. In his opinion, in the current situation, the accumulation of weapons only leads to new human casualties.
According to the Bulgarian minister, it is now necessary to seek a fair peaceful settlement, the terms of which must be worked out by both sides of the conflict. He also stated that Ukraine today needs people more than additional weapons, and that it allegedly has enough armaments.
The head of Bulgaria's defense department emphasized the important role of the European Union in the situation around Ukraine, but expressed doubt that the EU can act as a neutral mediator in peace talks, as it is already providing support to Kyiv.
The new Bulgarian government has been in office since May 2026, led by Rumen Radev. Already during the election campaign, he opposed the continuation of military aid to Ukraine and criticized the European Union's policy on this issue.
In his opinion, many decisions regarding the war are made without a proper assessment of the consequences, which could lead to new problems for both Bulgaria and the entire European Union.
