In his post, Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Thank you to our great Secret Service and law enforcement for the swift and professional actions taken tonight against an armed man near the White House, who had a criminal past and, perhaps, an obsession with our country's most expensive building. The armed man is dead after a shootout with Secret Service agents near the White House gates."
The U.S. leader immediately used this incident as an argument in a long-standing political and construction dispute, recalling the April shooting during the Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel:
"This event happened a month after the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting and shows how important it is for all future presidents to get the safest and most protected space of its kind ever built in Washington, D.C. Our country's national security demands it!"
After the April assassination attempt at the hotel, he had already stated that the incident would not have happened if the residence had its own secure facility for such ceremonies.
However, the project faced serious challenges. The construction estimate continuously grew and, according to Trump's latest estimates, reached $400 million (it started at $200 million). The Republican plan to allocate federal budget money for this is currently blocked in the Senate.
Initially, the U.S. president promised that the construction "would not affect the current building," but as a result, the entire East Wing of the White House was completely demolished for the hall.
On April 1, 2026, a U.S. court ordered the suspension of construction work.
