Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on the afternoon of October 13, the Vatican press service reported.
Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis – lung adenocarcinoma.
The operation lasted approximately one and a half hours and, according to doctors, was successful, with no complications.
Earlier, Leo XIV himself announced that a small growth in his lung had been discovered during an examination. At that time, the Vatican did not specify whether it was malignant.
