Robot broke Usain Bolt's world record in the 100-meter sprint
At the Second World Humanoid Robot Competition in Beijing, an android nicknamed "Lightning" set a 100-meter sprint record, reports Xinhua news agency.
The robot covered the distance in 9.32 seconds, reaching a speed of approximately 14.5 m/s. Thus, the machine ran 100 meters faster than the fastest human in history — Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.
Bolt's world record is 9.58 seconds and was set in 2009. "Lightning" surpassed his result by 0.26 seconds.
However, robot results are not counted as human sports records, as they compete in a separate category. Nevertheless, the achievement shows how quickly technologies related to movement, balance, and control of humanoid machines are developing.
Details of "Lightning"'s design, as well as the characteristics of other robots participating in the competition, have not yet been disclosed.
