According to TVN24, the object resembling a GPS transmitter was found by employees of the railway carrier PKP Cargo during routine maintenance of a semi-wagon. This is a railway wagon without a roof, designed for transporting goods that do not require protection from precipitation. The wagon had been standing on a siding in Poznań since February, and before that, it had entered Belarus and Ukraine.

The railway workers informed the police, who sent an investigative team to the scene.

“This object, which resembles a GPS transmitter, will be sent for laboratory examination. Its purpose is primarily to answer the question of what this device is, what messages or information it contained, and what traces we can find on it,” said Łukasz Paterski from the Poznań police.

Whoever installed the transmitter faces up to two years in prison.

The railway track in Poland and most European countries is narrower than in Belarus and post-Soviet states. In border areas, European standard tracks extend into Belarus in several places. There have been repeated cases where wagons operating across the Polish-Belarusian border were used for smuggling cigarettes into Poland.
