A statement from the artist's representatives said Hockney "died at his home on June 11, one month shy of his 89th birthday," writes the BBC.
Hockney is one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, one of the greatest artists of Great Britain. He was born in Yorkshire, lived in London, and also owned several homes in California.
When in London, Hockney predominantly painted British landscapes and the picturesque nature of his native Yorkshire.
In sunny California, the artist was impressed by the swimming pools of Los Angeles, which became the main motif of his work in the 1960s and 1970s.
